American Country Music Artist are Popular the World Over
When I was a college student, I decided to spend the first semester of my junior year abroad. I traveled to Preston, England as part of an exchange program and studied at the University of Central Lancashire. Being from Texas, I really was not sure how people were going to react to my taste in music, but I was pleasantly surprised to find out that American Country Music is really popular the world over.

I went to the international office of the university and learned that I was going to be paired with a student from Germany as dorm mates. I was fine with that, because he was a really good guy and I figured that we would get along well. He was really interested in the United States and said he had always wanted to visit, and told him he was welcome to come visit any time and he could stay with me. He extended me the same invitation to Frankfurt.
One night I was studying and he was not in our room. I put on some Merle Haggard to unwind a little bit when he walked into the room. I figured that I would turn it off out of respect, but he asked me to keep it on, and began singing along with the lyrics. He said he loved American Country Music artist and started naming off all kinds of artists that he really admired.
We started chatting about country music and a guy from across the hall who was from Canada came over and said it was good to hear some music from “back home.” I told him how much I liked Shania Twain, and he said he was very proud of her contribution to the genre but said he was first and foremost an American Country Music fan.
A couple of days later, I was visiting a local market and could not help but notice George Strait playing on the radio. I asked the lady behind the counter if she knew who that was singing, and she gave me the strangest look. “Of course!” she responded. “That’s George Strait!” We began to chat, and I told her I was from Texas, which she thought was really cool. She told me that all she listened to in the store was American Country Music and said it has been a life-long love affair for her and all of her friends.
The strange thing for me is that whenever I travel in the United States, I meet more people that dislike country music than actually will admit that they enjoy it. I don’t know if it is a guilty pleasure for them or if they are being genuine. I heard one time that there were more Country/Western radio stations than any other kind in the U.S. It is kind of comical to me that I would have to go halfway across the world to find people who admitted to liking American Country Music, but it is good to know.
